Flowers by Beatrice in East Street, Sittingbourne, honours First World War soldiers

A florist has transformed her shop window into a shrine to the town’s war heroes.

The stunning display at Flowers by Beatrice in East Street features battlefield artefacts, pictures and names of Sittingbourne men and woman who died during the 1914-18 conflict.

It’s proved a real head-turner with passers-by and serves as a fitting addition to the First World War centenary commemorations taking place nationwide.

Beatrice Clark, the shop’s owner who created the memorial with manager, Sarah Fish, said: “Having a shop in Sittingbourne and having been brought up in the town, I didn’t think it was right to have a window and not do anything with it to commemorate our war dead.

“We are, what we are because of those men and women who gave their lives for us.”

Ammunition bags, shovels and shells are among items of memorabilia on show in the window.

The articles were recovered from First World War battlegrounds lent to the store by The Durand Group, which investigates historical military sites.

A total of 400 hanging cards, each containing the name of a Sittngbourne person killed in action, is a major feature of the commemorative collage.

Beatrice, who has run the shop for 11 years, said the display will stay “indefinitely” with visitors able to donate to an in-store collection for the Royal British Legion.

She said: “When we decided to name the soldiers killed we thought there might be about 300, but when we researched it the list was endless.

“But it’s definitely caught the public’s attention, so it’s definitely been worthwhile.”
