Sittingbourne: Dramatic footage shows grandfather swerving to avoid wrong-way lorry driver on Mill Way

A grandfather is "lucky to be alive" after a lorry swerved into the wrong lane in Sittingbourne, missing his car by inches.

Roy Williams, 60, of Fallowfield, was driving along Mill Way towards Sheerness docks just after 5am yesterday when the truck, which had a foreign number plate, appeared around the corner on the wrong side of the road.

The private hire driver, who captured the terrifying footage on his dashcam, managed to swerve out of the way in time but admitted he may not have been so fortunate had the incident occurred later in the morning.

"I had to get out of the way quickly otherwise the lorry would have collided with me," said Mr Williams, a dad-of-three and grandfather-of-five.

"I wasn't on the straight stretch of road, so I didn't see the lorry well in advance. I was on the bend so it took a couple of seconds for me to register that it was heading towards me on the same side of the road.

"It certainly got the heart racing and for a few minutes after you start to think about what could have happened if either vehicle was going faster or didn't have enough time to change lanes.

"There could have been a fatality if there were cars on the other side, but luckily the three vehicles behind him knew there was going to be a problem and slowed down to let me out.

"Thankfully at that time of the morning there was not that much traffic around so I guess luck was on my side.

"I suspect the lorry driver had parked on an industrial park overnight, and maybe he forgot he was in the UK and started driving on the wrong side of the road."

Mr Williams' wife, Karen, said in a Facebook post: "He is lucky to be alive."

Mr Williams said the incident has not been reported to the police at this stage, but he was thankful he had a dashcam fitted in his car.

"If anything nasty had happened, at least we would have had a third witness.

"You can't be too careful these days."
