Doddington: Henry Oldfield died after taking drug and drugs

A popular young man who had struggled to rid himself of alcohol and drug addiction died after going on one last binge, an inquest heard.

Henry Oldfield had misused drugs and alcohol for years, but had finally acknowledged he had a problem and had entered a rehabilitation centre last year.

He appeared to be making good progress but after 63 days suddenly fled the centre and travelled to Bogota in Colombia.

His father was Richard Oldfield, a former High Sheriff of Kent.

Henry was 25, single, and living at the family home of Doddington Place in Doddington.

He had trained in Florida as an aircraft pilot but had not pursued it as a career after suffering bouts of anxiety.

He was a talented musician and a website of his compositions – www.soundcloud.com/incolour – has received thousands of hits since his death.

Mr Oldfield described a “very loving” telephone call he had with Henry from Colombia, in which his son had seemed clear headed.

He offered to fly out but Henry said there was no point as he would be coming home shortly.

But 24 hours later, on April 24 last year, he was found dead in his hotel room.

Post-mortem examinations in Colombia and England found he had ingested a cocktail of alcohol and psychotic drugs, including cocaine, with no evidence of any third party involvement.

Coroner Allison Summers said: “This is a profoundly sad case. Unfortunately, it is too often the case that drug-users who relapse after a period of abstinence can inadvertently overdose because their bodies’ tolerance to the drugs has lowered.”

She concluded Henry’s death had been accidental. His step-mother Amicia Oldfield described Henry as “very brave and calm in a crisis and always kind to everyone”.

Henry’s birth mother, Alexandra Oldfield, died when he was three, which his father said Henry had always found difficult to deal with.

Mr Oldfield, who is Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Kent and president of Demelza Hospice Care for Children, said: “Henry was an absolutely lovely boy.

"He had lots of friends and a family who adored him. We will miss him terribly.”

Henry leaves a sister Leonora and two brothers, Christopher and Edward.
