Lorry driver William Magee charged in connection with death of cyclist Barbara Phipps on A2 in Teynham

A lorry driver arrested in connection with the death of a cyclist on the A2 in Teynham has been charged.

Barbara Phipps, 73, from Lynsted, died following a crash with a Co-Op vehicle in London Road in February.

Police have now revealed William Magee, of Readers Court, Chelmsford, Essex, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.

The 58-year-old has been bailed to appear before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on August 26.

Police, fire, medics and the air ambulance were called to London Road, near the junction of Lynsted Lane, at about 10.15am on February 13.

The road was shut for more than seven hours while police investigated.

In March, police returned to the scene and closed London Road for about four hours to partially reconstruct what had happened so serious collision investigation officers could find out more about the circumstances.

Barbara’s four daughters and son paid tribute to her at the time. They said: “She was a very loving, caring mum who interacted with many people in and around the village.

“We are all very touched and appreciate all of the kind messages and tributes from the members of the local community at this difficult time.”

Magee’s bail expired on Monday and the following day police confirmed he had been charged, having been arrested on the day of the crash.
