Westlands Primary School pupils try to solve mystery of large egg

A large egg resting in a bed of straw caused quite a stir at one school.

Its mysterious arrival in the hall of Westlands Primary led to pupils being called to an ‘emergency assembly’ to try to solve where it had come from.

Suggestions ranged from dinosaurs, ostriches, giant chickens and maybe even Bigfoot. With these ideas in mind, the youngsters then took it upon themselves to create ‘Wanted’ signs for whatever they thought might have left the object.

Some even made a Newsround presentation, wrote descriptive letters to The Ministry of Unusual Objects to make it aware of their highly unusual discovery and produced collages out of various materials.

Year 2 pupil Freddie Wright, seven, had his own opinions. He said: “I think the giant egg came from a dragon that was very good at building. It couldn’t fit through the doors so I think it smashed a hole to get in, laid its egg and then built a new wall around it to keep it safe.”

It was organised as part of transition week which sees each class spending a week with their new teacher before the end of the academic year.

Assistant head teacher Sarah Scott said: “The whole experience was definitely worth the amount of effort that was put into it.

“A mystery and an idea that the teachers don’t always have the one single answer gave the children the chance to use their imaginations to the utmost.”
