An 83-year-old man has been jailed after pleading guilty to historic abuse of children.

Terrence Matthews, of Heavitree Road, Exeter, was jailed for six and a half years at Maidstone Crown Court yesterday.

Matthews was charged with 11 counts of sexually assaulting children between the ages of 11 and 15 between 1975 and 1980.

The court heard how Matthews abused four boys over a number of years in separate incidents who lived within the Medway towns and Sittingbourne.

Investigating officer for Kent Police, DC Karen Caulfield, of the Public Protection Unit, said: "Matthews carried out various attacks on these victims and I would like to commend their bravery and courage in supporting this investigation.

"I hope that this sentence will give them some form of closure.

"Kent Police takes all allegations of child sex abuse extremely seriously, whether recent or historic and I would like to encourage anyone with concerns to always get in touch because we will listen and investigate and bring those responsible to justice."
