Police and partners in crackdown on driving offences in Sittingbourne

Police have been cracking down on traffic offences in Sittingbourne.

Yesterday, Special Constables joined forces with representatives from the DVLA, HMRC, and the DVSA for a road safety operation in the town.

Special Constables performed 27 random stops in Mill Way between 9am and 3pm which led to the seizure of one uninsured vehicle.

Police also issued two vehicle deficit rectification (DVRS) notices for illegal number plates and three for people not wearing seatbelts.

The notices give recipients 14 days to fix problems before further action is taken.

"Their efforts with this operation helped lead to positive enforcement action being taken against motorists who choose to ignore laws the vast majority of road users abide by" - Inspector Richard Bushell

DVLA employees clamped five vehicles for not having valid road tax while DVSA inspectors issued a driver of a vehicle with a flat tyre a notice forcing them to repair it immediately.

Tests for red diesel were carried out but no vehicles were found to have the fuel in their tanks, which is illegal.

Inspector Richard Bushell said: "This work was pre-planned and shows the varied and important role special constables play within Kent Police.

"On one shift they could be assisting patrols with an arrest warrant and on another they could be called on to take part in a road safety operation, such as this.

"Their efforts with this operation helped lead to positive enforcement action being taken against motorists who choose to ignore laws the vast majority of road users abide by."
