Police officer John Dyos sues speeding driver Daniel Hadler, who hit him with his car in Sittingbourne

A former policeman forced to quit his job after suffering devastating injuries when he was hit by a speeding driver is suing for damages.

John Dyos was struck by a Mercedes in London Road, Sittingbourne, while out running as he crossed the road by the Coniston Hotel.

The impact sent him flying through the air and he was left with a huge head injury, bruising to the brain, collapsed lungs, and multiple fractures.

Daniel Hadler, estimated to have been driving at 49mph in the 30mph limit, was convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

He said he didn't have his phone with him when the crash happened, but it was found to have been in use.

Laura Murphy of Irwin Mitchell, representing Mr Dyos, said a writ had been issued at the High Court.

"We are continuing to work on John's behalf to help him overcome the terrible injuries he suffered" - Laura Murphy

"We have issued court proceedings in a bid to secure John the funds he will need to continue his rehabilitation and recovery from the injuries he suffered, which forced him to retire from his previous employment," she added.

"Primary liability for the injuries John suffered has been admitted by the driver’s insurance company and we are continuing to work on John’s behalf to help him overcome the terrible injuries he suffered in the incident in October 2013."

Mr Dyos had been training for a half marathon when he was struck in October 2013.

He was taken to King’s College Hospital in London and had to have surgery for a fractured skull.

Nearly three years on, he has been forced to retire from his job as a police detective constable.

Hadler, then aged 35, of Whimbrel Close, Milton Regis,was jailed for two years and three months and banned from driving for three years.
