A statement on the supplier's website said the outage had been caused by an underground electricity cable that had faulted on its high voltage network, causing an area-wide power cut.

A spokesman said: "Sorry for any disruption this may be causing you.

"We estimate your power will be back on between 12pm and 1pm.

"We may be able to get some customers on sooner."

UK Power Networks said power had been restored to all homes by 1pm.
