The former pupil of the old Sheerness Technical School and Borden Grammar, was born into a large family well-known in the town for their homemade sweets business.

At 17, he went to Exeter University and graduated with a degree in economics and economic history.

He then went on to complete a post graduate diploma in personnel management in Manchester.

His first job was with the Co-op in the same city where he worked in personnel before becoming personnel director for Letraset in Ashford.

It was in January 1975, at the age of 31, that he set up NAG which has offices in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne, and Discovery Park, Sandwich.

Mr Cassell, who lived in Newnham, prided himself in the quality of the staff who worked with him and his style of management has been reflected in the fact that over half of his employees have worked with him for more than 10 years, with several members of staff having more than 20 years service.

Son Andrew said: “His passion for Swale and the community was well known. He chaired the Chamber of Commerce in 1979/80 and together with other local prominent businessmen fought tirelessly to save the Memorial Hospital from closure.

“He was heavily involved with many charities and not-for-profit organisations, such as VOICE and SWIM and was President of Sittingbourne Rotary Club in 1985.

“He was a trustee of Demelza House, chairman of Sittingbourne and Sheppey District Care Committee For Chest, Heart And Stroke and a trustee and continued supporter of the Swale Youth Development Fund.

“He was also a Freeman of the City of London and heavily involved with The Worshipful Company of Upholders.”

Anyone who knew Mr Cassell is welcome to attend the service which takes place at 2pm at Newnham village church.
