A Sittingbourne woman is in a London hospital with life-threatening injuries following a two-car crash on the M20 yesterday (Thursday).

The 27-year-old was driving a red Smart Roadster at the Londonbound junction of the A249 when it was involved in a collision with a blue Citroen C5. A blue fiat was also involved in the incident.

Her passenger, a 33-year-old man, also from Sittingbourne, suffered serious injuries. He is in a critical but stable condition at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham.

The accident happened at 11.31am on the London-bound carriageway of the motorway, forcing police to close all lanes.

The coastbound side of M20 was shut for a time to allow the air ambulances to land, while congestion was also reported on the A20, A229 and A249, as drivers tried to avoid the queues.

The motorway was fully re-opened at around 3.35pm.

The driver of the fiat, a 66-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. His passengers, a 45-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl also suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Citroen C5 was uninjured.

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit are asking witnesses to contact them on 01622 798538.
