Firefighters called to van on A249 at turn off for Iwade and Kemsley

Motorists were warned of rush-hour delays after smoke from a van covered a carriageway on the A249 this afternoon.

Traffic officers from Highways England were initially alerted to what was thought to have been a van fire on the Sheppey-bound carriageway at the turn off for Iwade and Kemsley.

KCC Highways warned drivers to expect delays in the area.

Firefighters were called to the van shortly before 4pm.

However, a spokesman from the Kent Fire and Rescue Service said an initial report of a van blaze was a false alarm.

He said: "We were called at 3.55pm.

"This turned out to be a blown turbo on a van and no action was required from KFRS."

Kent Police did not attend the incident.
