Mings takeaway restaurant job advert ‘was discriminatory’

A Chinese takeaway has been accused of putting up a discriminatory job advert in its window.

Mings, in Newington High Street, had a sign saying “Sunday cashier wanted (female) age 20-30”.

Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal to be biased against someone due to age or gender.

Dexter Smith spotted the sign and said: “I was shocked to see such blatant discrimination.

“I’m in my 40s and have a job but I know people looking for part-time work who would want to do it.

"It’s the second time a similar advert has been in their window although the last time it was the previous owner.”

A spokesman for Mings said the poster was what the “owner wanted” and when questioned over the fact it was illegal to advertise specifically for an age or gender, said they “didn’t know about that”.

He also said it was not them being “sexist or ageist”. The poster was taken down on Saturday.
