Wedding appeal for terminally ill Sittingbourne mum Aimee Willett raises more than £30k in 26 hours

A fundraising appeal to help make a terminally ill mum’s wedding dream come true reached over £30,000 just 26 hours after going live.

The original target was £2,000 but that has been smashed thanks to one anonymous donation of £25,000.

David Fairbank created it during the early hours of Thursday morning after reading the tragic story of Aimee Willett from Sittingbourne.

The mum of two was diagnosed with cancer last December.

It was discovered following her first smear test at the age of 25, which is when screening starts.

She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but in June another tumour was found – and this time it was inoperable.

While she has been told she will be here to enjoy this year’s festivities with her two sons Charlie, eight, and Kaleb, three, the longer-term prognosis is less clear.

"I started reading it at 11pm on Wednesday night and it really touched me. It was more the fact she’s got two young kids and she’s such a young age to find out she’s got cancer" - David Fairbank

Speaking out about her tragic circumstances in the hope of encouraging other women to attend their cervical screenings, she said she was determined to make this Christmas the best one ever by taking her sons to Lapland UK.

She also revealed she had drawn up a bucket list, which includes a trip to Disneyland Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower light show as well as marrying her partner Michael Bond, 26.

It was the latter which led to Mr Fairbank, from Suffolk, starting the campaign after he saw an article in a national newspaper which had picked up the story.

The 27-year-old said: "I started reading it at 11pm on Wednesday night and it really touched me. It was more the fact she’s got two young kids and she’s such a young age to find out she’s got cancer after having her first smear test.

"I sat up until 1am the following day writing the page on JustGiving. I submitted it and it was approved by 12pm.

"It’s amazing that it’s reached £30,000. I’m gob smacked by it and pretty chuffed. It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like it.

"We don’t know who made the £25,000 donation. It could be a celebrity or a businessman."

Ben Matthews, from JustGiving, confirmed the site is legitimate.

He said: "We are in touch with Aimee and we have her bank details, so she will get the proceeds."

Over the last three days the KM Group has been inundated with emails and calls from businesses and individuals wanting to help the former Sittingbourne Community College student.

They include wedding planners, florists, car companies, professional photographers, venues plus cake makers from Ashford, Rainham, Rochester, Gillingham and Aylesford.

Miss Willett, of Charlotte Street, said: "It’s been overwhelming, mental. I never thought this was going to happen. People offering [all this], it’s lovely, it’s beautiful.

"But it’s got the message out there to raise awareness which is the only thing I really wanted."
