World War One serviceman honoured by great-niece

A woman has completed a pilgrimage in honour of her great-uncle on the 100th anniversary of the soldier’s death in the First World War.

Corporal Walter Ager was among 30 servicemen from Newington who died during the conflict after being killed on the Somme battlefield just four months after the conflict began.

His relative Kate Broom, who lives in Chatham, visited the village to see a memorial cross and view a recently unveiled book of remembrance that has records of every Newington man who fought in the Great War.

The 28-year-old said: “It’s very sad, but seeing something in writing about him is quite moving. I’m so glad that he’s being remembered like this.”

The Newington History Group plans to release an updated version of the book in March.

Copies can be pre-ordered by emailing thelma@newingtonhistory.co.uk or calling 01795 842711.
