Sittingbourne couple's first baby born the same day as the future heir to the throne

It wasn’t just Kate and Will celebrating the birth of their first child on Monday.

On the same day as the future heir to the throne was born, Chris Payne and his wife, Hannah, of Park Drive, Sittingbourne, welcomed their daughter, Jessica, into the world.

The tot was born at 9.04am at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, weighing 8lb 15oz.

The duke and duchess’s son, who is yet to be named, was born exactly seven hours and 20 minutes later, and weighed in at 8lbs 6oz.

Mr Payne, 26, said: “Who knows? Jessica might be his princess. After all, Will married a commoner.

“Hannah was in labour for 50 hours. People said they thought she was hanging on for the royal baby to be born as she was two weeks late. Her due date was July 8.”

Mothers who gave birth the same day as Kate Middleton will be sent a lucky silver coin.

The Royal Mint is giving away 2,013 of the keepsakes to new-borns who share their birthday with the future king or queen.

The sterling silver coin displays a shield of the royal arms – three lions, the Scottish lion and the Irish harp – along with the year 2013. Depending on the sex of the child receiving it, the coin will be presented in a pink or blue pouch.

Crossing the palms of babies with silver is said to bring luck, health and wealth.

Parents have 60 days after the birth to claim the coins on the Royal Mint’s Facebook page.

Mr Payne added: “I’ve already been in contact with them about, it so we’re hoping to get one.”

Another Sittingbourne couple also celebrated the birth of their second child on the same day.

Jake Oliver Gary Smith was born to parents Danielle and Iain Smith at 3.09pm at the Gillingham-based hospital.

He weighed 8lb 7oz.

The couple live on the Eden Village estate with their three-year-old son Finley James.
