Shane Byrne finished runner-up in both British Superbike races at Thruxton on Sunday.

Australian Josh Brookes claimed his first double of the season, with Ryuichi Kiyonari claiming two third places.

Byrne and Kiyonari were involved in another thrilling battle – just like at Brands Hatch – in the closing stages of the opening race.

Kiyonari had climbed from ninth to overtake Byrne on the last lap but the Sittingbourne man regained second place, finishing 4.3sec behind winner Brookes.

The top three in race two were separated by just half a second in a repeat of the first podium.

Byrne, who leads Brookes 261-179 in the standings, said: “You would have to say that being able to run as close to Josh as we did in the second part, when he was having such strong race, shows we made a step forward.

“In the end, we were really close to Josh, who had the measure of everyone this weekend.”

Round seven, a triple header at Oulton Park, takes place this weekend.
