Key midfielder Peter Smith is staying with Sittingbourne for the rest of the season.

Smith, Nick Davis’ first signing as manager, has turned down several advances from Southern Counties East leaders Phoenix.

Boss Davis said: “Phoenix have kept trying but Peter’s committed for the rest of the season. He’d been umming and aahing – they’re top of the league and he’s got friends there – but he’s enjoyed himself here.

“It’s the first time he’s played in Ryman South, he’s always been in North and he’s told me he’s going to see out the season. He’s the backbone of the side and a player I’d like to keep next season. He’s only just turning 30, too, so he’s a good age.”

Sittingbourne could have two new signings in place for the home game against Walton & Hersham on Saturday.

They’re holding talks ahead of a match against opponents beaten 6-2 by Folkestone last weekend.

Davis said: “When you’ve been beaten like that, the first thing you do is go out to keep a clean sheet and start with the basics again.

“In a way it might be a good time to play them but you never know. They’re just below us in lower mid-table and, in fairness, it’s not a bad game."
