Sittingbourne boss Matt Wyatt is looking forward to another away game on Saturday after dubbing his team’s home pitch the worst in the league.

The Brickies have won five games on the road this season - although they were 3-0 winners at home to Whitstable on Tuesday - and Wyatt believes the reason for the superior away record is simple.

He said: “It’s the worst playing surface in the league – it’s awful.

“We were without a game on Saturday and so we had a training session on the pitch. I had 26 players turn up and it was a great turnout but I stopped the game. The pitch was diabolical.

“It’s no surprise that we’ve got the best away record in the league.

“We’re a passing side and East Grinstead clapped us off the pitch when we won there. Our home form is not good, though, and people ask me why.

“The groundsman does as much as he can but it’s uneven and it’s getting worse. We’ve been to Corinthian Casuals, Hythe and Folkestone – all lovely pitches – and won all of those games. Teams who have played direct football at our ground have had success. Our worst performance of the season was at home to Dorking in the FA Cup.”

Sittingbourne travel to Walton & Hersham on Saturday.
