Is David Wood real?

by Hayley Robinson

It's a question which has been the talk of the town since signs started appearing around Sittingbourne last week – Is David Wood Real?

Now, the Sittingbourne News Extra can reveal that yes, he is does exist.

By day he works as an ICT technician at Fulston Manor School, by night he can be found belting out tunes such as those from Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra during karaoke nights at The Park Tavern.

A total of 50 posters were made and put up by his friends in the hope it would create interest about the man behind the name as he plans to hold An Evening with David Wood at the watering hole in Park Road, Sittingbourne, to raise money for charity.

He did not know anything about the signs until pupils at the school in Brenchley Road, Sittingbourne, started asking staff if they were about him.

Mr Wood said: "I didn’t have a clue. I know who’s done it and I think he’s got more stuff up his sleeves to drum up interest."

The 26-year-old was inspired to hold the event by famous singers such as his hero Buble.

"Whenever there’s karaoke, I’m first up," he said.

"It was before Christmas, me and a group of friends were in the pub and we were talking about wouldn’t it be funny to do an evening with David Wood, it started off as a laugh then we were like, why not? I think I’ve got a pretty good voice."

The landlords Madeline and Michael Bean agreed to host the event as long as it was for charity.

He chose the British Heart Foundation in memory of Dean Lamb, a pub regular who died in a crash while on holiday in Greece.

Mr Wood, of Belmont Road, Sittingbourne, said: "He [Dean] raised a lot of money for them over the years. I knew him fairly well from seeing him down the pub."

An Evening with David Wood will be held on March 24 from 8pm. Tickets will need to be purchased for the night but prices are yet to be confirmed. A raffle will also be held.
