Lucky escape for 'Shakey'

by Hayley Robinson

Sittingbourne’s Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne had a lucky escape when he and his family were involved in a car accident.

The British Superbike Champion Tweeted on Monday how he survived the 70mph head on crash only to then be knocked down by a car.

The first post at around noon said: " Bad day. Was in a multi car pile up early am, survived that in the pitch black, got out of my van, then got knocked down by another car!

"Wish I could say I was joking, fortunately wife and children OK, suspected broken ankle turned out to be OK #callmelucky. 70mph head on smash, knocked down by another car after the crash and a sore ankle. Somebody was looking out for me!"

Three hours later he posted a picture of his mangled Mercedes-Benz Vito for his followers to see (pictured).

The 35-year-old said: "Like to say a massive thank you from myself and my family to all our well wishers, this isn’t how to modify a Vito!"

Shakey and his family were abroad at the time of the accident but it’s not clear from the messages where it happened.

He also Tweeted that he’d lost his house keys in the crash and was charged 275 Euros by a locksmith to get in to his home.
