Fire crew tackled fire in a car on the A28 between Tenterden and Rolvenden

A man suffered burns after a fire broke out in the rear of his car in Rolvenden this afternoon.

Police were called at 3.22pm to reports of a car fire on Rolvenden Hill.

A small fire is believed to have broken out in the back of a silver Nissan Navara and the male driver suffered minor burns and was taken to hospital.

The 4x4 was ablaze when firefighters arrived shortly before 3.30pm at the scene in Rolvenden Hill, Rolvenden.

Traffic quickly backed up on the road from Tenterden.

Motorists reported seeing smoke in the area and were passed by a fire engine heading to the scene.

A fire service spokesman confirmed: "Crews were called at 3.08pm to reports of a 4x4 on fire, near the top of Rolvenden Hill, which they dealt with using a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus. Firefighting operations stopped at 4pm.

Police and ambulance were also sent to the scene.

Stagecoach buses were running late in the area as a result of the incident.

Services to Tenterden and Hastings faced approximately 40 minute delays, the bus company said on Twitter.
