Mum Joanna Watts lucky to be alive after car spins out of control in Bethersden

A mother has spoken of the terrifying moment her car spun out of control after skidding on an oil spill.

Joanna Watts, 42, was driving towards Tenterden on the A28 in Bethersden on Friday, just past the turning for Bull Lane, when she collided with a van.

Mrs Watts, who was on her way to pick her son up from golf, says she feels lucky to be alive, as the accident could have been much worse.

The mum-of-two said: “I hit the oil and lost control of my car, smashed into a van and then bounced off. I sailed across the road and then went into a ditch. It was terrifying.

“I have spoken to the other driver involved, and he pointed out that had there been a time difference of a second or two, I would have ploughed into him head-on and there could have been a very different outcome.

“His van essentially catapulted me back across the road, skidding on the fuel, all the way into the ditch.”

Mrs Watts, from Singleton, was treated at the scene for neck injuries.

The cost of the repairs to her car is estimated at around £4,500.

Police and Kent County Council highways team were called to assist with the road closure and clear up.

However, Mrs Watts feels there should be an investigation, as she believes there was another accident along the same stretch of road just before hers.

She said: “The oil was everywhere. Whoever spilt it was going towards Tenterden.

“The crews at the scene said that they attended another crash along that road, suggesting the fuel was not cleared up properly.”

Mrs Watts has appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
