Broadstairs girl, 14, charged with arson over blaze in Westwood Cross shopping centre yard

A girl has been charged with arson by police investigation a fire at Westwood Cross that caused more than £20,000 of damage.

The 14-year-old was held after the blaze broke out in a yard at the Thanet shopping centre.

The teenager, from Broadstairs, is due to appear at Canterbury Youth Court on Wednesday, November 13.

Fire crews were called shortly before 1pm on August 21 to the blaze in a service yard.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said a fence, fibre glass outbuilding and bushes were alight.

It took firefighters from Margate station around 30 minutes to put out the blaze.

Shoppers reported smoke billowing over shops, but the centre did not need to be evacuated.
