Jamie Streatfield of Westgate jailed after row in bar led to ear biting

A log cabin fitter bit off part of a teacher’s ear – after seeing “red mist” in a pub bust-up, a court has heard.

Furious Jamie Streatfield, 29, had been drinking in a pub when he lost his temper and attacked victim Michael Dadd.

The judge told him: “That attack was brutal, savage and horrifying because you used your teeth to bite off about one-third of your victim’s left ear.”

Mr Dadd’s ear was found on the floor of Broadstairs' Barnaby Rudge Pub but surgeons were unable to sew it back on.

He has now been left with a permanent injury, Canterbury Crown Court has heard.

Streathfield, of Domneva Road, Westgate-on-Sea had admitted wounding with intent and was jailed for a total of 40 months.

Prosecutor Terence Woods told how he had been drinking at the pub on Saturday March 2 last year when two other men became involved in an argument at the bar.

One of the men was pushed onto a table before the argument was stopped by the landlord. At this point Streatfield approached the man, who had been pushed, and bit part of his ear off.

Streatfield’s girlfriend screamed when she saw what he had done, calling him ‘an animal’ before the two left the pub together.

Although he had just qualified, Mr Dadd said the psychological effects of the injury had left him suffering from depression and nightmares

"That attack was brutal, savage and horrifying because you used your teeth to bite off about one-third of your victim’s left ear" - Recorder George Pulman QC

The judge Recorder George Pulman QC told him: “For reasons which aren’t clear you lost your temper, had a rest mist and attacked your victim.

“I am impressed by your remorse and I accept that you are horrified by what you have done and embarrassed by it.”

Investigating officer Detective Constable Louise Hammond said: "This was a brutal attack that left a man permanently disfigured and still in need of medical treatment more than a year on.

"There is no room for this type of behaviour in a civilised society and I am pleased this has been reflected in the lengthy prison sentence Streatfield has received."
