A father has spoken of his horror at finding maggots in a tin of beans he was going to give to his daughter.

Dean Smith of Vereth Road, Ramsgate was about to serve up the canned goods to his 18-month-old daughter Roxie Rose Smith for her tea.

He opened one of a multipack of four cans but when he opened the outer packaging he saw one of them had split.

After taking a closer look he saw there were maggots coming from the damaged tin and they had spread to other goods kept in the cupboard.

Mr Smith, who is a scaffolder, said: “My partner went shopping yesterday afternoon.

“Roxie didn’t like the meal that was cooked so I went to make her some beans on toast.

“I found a tin of beans that looked like they had been opened and maggots crawling around.”

The 32-year-old who lives with his daughter and partner Bonny Drinkwater, 25, said he went back to the discount retailer to tell them what he had found.

He said he was offered a full refund but refused to take it as staff said that they wouldn’t reimburse him for the rest of the food from the cupboard which had to be thrown away.

The product was thought to have cost £1.50.

He added: “I have made a letter of complaint to Aldi and also made a complaint to the hygiene department at Thanet District Council.

“It wasn’t about the money for me, I’ve had food poisoning before and I didn’t want her to get that” - Dave Smith

“I even took the receipt with me and once I was there they took me to the area where they keep the deliveries.

“I wanted them to give me the money for the food that I had to throw away because the maggots were everywhere.”

Mr Smith said that he was concerned what would have happened if he had served the food to his daughter.

He said: “It wasn’t about the money for me, I’ve had food poisoning before and I didn’t want her to get that.”

An Aldi spokesman said: “Incidents like this are extremely rare, but can occur as a result of damage to the packaging which exposes the product to air.

“We have apologised to Mr Smith and offered to provide him with a full refund.”
