Iris Johnston has been confirmed as new leader of Thanet council.

She succeeds Clive Hart who quit the role unexpectedly this week, saying he was fed up with the ‘toxic’ behaviour of his colleagues and launching an outspoken attack on Green councillor Ian Driver.

Cllr Johnston, who represents Margate Central ward, is a veteran of Thanet politics and her election to the role makes her the first female leader of the authority.

The news of her appointment was first revealed in the Thanet Extra this week.

It ends a turbulent week for the party. After Clive Hart’s resignation, two Labour councillors announced they were leaving the group.

Cllr Alan Poole, former deputy leader and Michelle Fenner said they would sit as independent councillors.
