Nigel Farage to launch Ukip campaign to quit the EU at a major rally in Margate tonight

Nigel Farage launched Ukip's campaign for Britain to quit the EU, telling the audience at Margate's Winter Gardens: We want our country back.

The party leader returned to familiar stomping ground to launch what he hopes will be a more successful campaign than his run at becoming the MP for South Thanet in May.

He set out his arguments for quitting the EU against the backdrop of the escalating refugees crisis affecting Europe and on the day that the Prime Minister will announce that the UK will take thousands more Syrian refugees.

Mr Farage told the audience: "We have to put aside our differences over whether we are left or right in campaign. If we do, rest of Europe will too.

Turning to the ongoing migrant crisis, he added: "Most of these are not refugees, they are economic migrants.

"My predictions of mass movement of refugees has come true - the EU has made a huge mistake."

And to thunderous applause, he added: "The only way we can control immigration is by having control of borders."

The campaign launch comes against a backdrop of opinion polls that place the yes and no camps evenly divided.

However, one poll at the weekend suggested support for the "no" campaign had edged ahead slightly.
