Firefighters were forced to walk to a house blaze in the early hours of this morning after their engines were blocked by parked cars.

Crews continued on foot after struggling to get to the kitchen fire in Buckingham Road, Margate, where a woman in her 60s was still inside.

Firefighters went into the terraced home wearing breathing gear and rescued the woman, before giving oxygen to her and her son.

The pair were then checked over by paramedics at the scene, but did not need to go to hospital.

The living room was destroyed in the fire, with 20% damage to the kitchen.

It is believed to have started in a toaster at 3am and spread through the home via soft furnishings.

The fire was tackled by two crews and a volunteer response team and was out by 3.30am.
