Ramsgate: Andrew Mullen jailed for assault and theft

A thief – who was chased by his victim – turned around and snarled: "Don't think I wouldn't hit a woman."

Andrew Mullen, 42, who has more than 50 previous convictions for robbery and thefts, had stolen the 52-year-old woman’s purse.

A judge jailed Mullen for 40 months after telling him: “No one reading your criminal profile would think for one second that you wouldn’t hit a woman.”

Mullen, of Loughborough Court, Ramsgate, had admitted four charges of theft and assault and breaching a three-month conditional discharge.

Canterbury Crown Court had heard how he had preyed on a number of “vulnerable” victims in Turner Street and Sussex Street, Ramsgate, in May.

Judge James O’Mahony said: “Your offending included devious behaviour, seemingly comforting a woman. But, once having an opportunity, helping yourself to their property and assaulting them.

“You went up to her, seemingly sympathetic, offering her comfort while all the while intending on helping yourself to her property.”

The court heard how Mullen cut a strap to his victim’s bumbag before running away.

Days later, Mullen took £220 worth of property from a 35-year-old man whom he had befriended.

And he made his victim reveal a credit card pin number, although it was never used.

The judge added: “And yet just 48 hours later, you duped and deceived another vulnerable woman out walking her dog.

“As soon as you got the opportunity you told her: ‘You are going to be done!’ before taking her purse.

“She had the guts and the courage to go after you and confront you.”

It was then Mullen warned her that he was prepared to use violence.

Mullen took money from the purse before throwing it back at the victim.

He then attempted to throw a punch before pushing her to the ground and fleeing.
