The unknown white lumpy substances are being found more often following winter storms over the last couple of years, and may be better described as "mineral and vegetable oils" - as palm oil is only one type.

A sample of the substance found has been sent off for testing.

Thanet District Council is advising owners to keep dogs on leads on the beach.

The deposits are a waxy substance, yellow or white in colour and smell like diesel or firelighters.

Council officers are inspecting Thanet’s coastline and cleansing teams are being alerted of any deposits.

Anyone who comes across what they expect to be palm oil or any other harmful substance is urged to call the council with as much information as possible, including location, photo, size, quantity, and if it has been removed from the beach.

Any sightings can be reported to the council on 01843 577000.
