Ramsgate station has reopened after bomb disposal experts removed an unexploded Second World War device.

Commuters faced rail chaos after a cordon was thrown around the area when workers discovered the bomb at around 2.15pm.

The station was closed for more than five hours while Ministry of Defence bomb disposal experts removed the device. It was taken to Joss Bay beach for detonation.

The device was found on a building site close to the station, in St Stephen's Close.

A 100-yard cordon was thrown around the area, including the station, and trains stopped.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to St Stephens Close at 2.15pm this afternoon to reports of an unexploded bomb had been discovered by workmen."

Southeastern said trains through Ramsgate were cancelled, delayed or revised at short notice.

The operator ran bus replacement services between Margate, Dover Priory, Canterbury West and Ramsgate.

Among those affected were children who travel to Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School Federation by train.

One 11-year-old Year 7 girl, who travels to school by bus from Broadstairs, said: "We came out of school and were told that anyone who travels by train should go into the hall.

"There was a lot of panic with people trying to call their mums on their mobiles. One of my friends was nearly in tears and very upset because she couldn't get hold of her mum."
