An elderly woman died after a crash on the A299 Thanet Way near St Nicholas at Wade.

The crash, which involved a Nissan Micra and an Audi, happened on the London-bound carriageway at around 10.10pm last night.

A police spokesman said an 86-year-old woman driving the Nissan died at the scene.

The male driver of the Audi was taken to the QEQM Hospital at Margate with leg injuries. A passenger in the Audi was also hurt, although not seriously.

A police spokesman said the crash has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because a police car was on the coastbound carriageway and officers witnessed it.

The road was closed after the crash but has now reopened.
