Margate boss Nikki Bull travels to Portugal to attend boot camp organised by Leyton Orient first team goalkeeper coach Martin Brennan

Nikki Bull admits the chance to travel to Portugal to work with a former goalkeeping mentor was too good to refuse.

But the Margate boss has again confirmed that he has no intention of being a player-manager for the Blues in Vanarama National League South this season.

Former Wycombe Wanderers No.1 Bull is one of 12 keepers attending a four-day boot camp at the Amendoeira Golf Resort in Portugal.

The trip was organised by Martin Brennan, Bull's former goalkeeping coach at Wycombe, who starts a new job in the same role at League 2 Leyton Orient on July 1.

Brennan has also previously worked at Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, and Bull says when the opportunity came along to join his camp in Portugal, he didn't need to think twice even if the programme does include 7am training runs!

Speaking from the Algarve the 34-year-old explained: "The call from Martin came out of the blue. He said one of the goalkeepers who was due to go had withdrawn and would I fancy it.

"It was win-win really. He's a fantastic coach and it's great to have the chance to work with him again. It gives me an opportunity to improve my own fitness and also to run the rule over some of the keepers who are out there.

"I'm not that badly out of shape because I've been going to the gym but match fitness is a different type of fitness so this is a chance to get myself a bit sharper."

Bull will be registered to play in emergencies for Gate this season, but he remains in the market for a new No.1, ideally someone he can take on loan from a Football League club.

The Gate boss says he has several irons in the fire but admits he may not be able to tie anything up until next month.

That may mean he has to keep goal for a couple of Margate's early pre-season friendlies but he says he has no intention of retaining the jersey beyond that.

He added: "I've made it clear all along that I am definitely a manager now and not a keeper. It makes sense for me to be signed on but I only plan to play if I absolutely have to."

Meanwhile, Margate have confirmed that defender Glenn Wilson has left the club after being out of contract at the end of last season.

The right-back, who moved to Hartsdown from Aldershot in the summer of 2015, played almost every minute of the 2015/16 campaign and was named players' player of the year.
