Huge crowds flock to 'best ever' Big Event

Picture Gallery

Organisers of Margate’s Big Event have described the weekend’s extravaganza as the biggest and best ever and have already started preparing for its return in 2010.

Crowds of more than 60,000 flocked to Palm Bay on Saturday and Sunday for Kent’s leading air and land festival.

Families gazed into the skies above the cliff tops to catch a glimpse of amazing aircraft including the famous Red Arrows, the RAF’s latest Eurofighter Typhoon jet and the historic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Entertainers kept the packed showground amused, with circus teams, jugglers, acrobats and human statues all making an appearance over the two days.

KM Group photographer Paul Dennis was there to capture the action for the Thanet Extra, official media partners of the event alongside kmfm for Thanet. Other pictures are by Thanet Extra reader Colin Miles.

WOW! A free action packed afternoon and a great air show? The air show was great BUT I don't believe that the writers of articles on the event attended the same one as my family and I. I tiptoed through chip cartons, beer bottles and goodness knows what else to get to the funfair with my children, which I have to add was very expensive. Bins were overflowing and despite bin bags being handed out many people still failed to use them. It's not difficult to take your rubbish home with you! Also, why so much alcohol? Isn't there anyone out there who can have a good time without it? Don't even get me started on lack of toilets...but,well done to the air display teams - fantastic!

Now Mr Latchford has had his ego trip for another year, is he going to send some roadsweepers up to palm Bay estate and clear up the mess thats lying all over the place. As for next year can he arrange for a car park, larger roads to cope with the extra traffic, which would also allow the residents to gain access to their properties, more public toilets so people don't find the need to urinate up fences on their way home.Or to solve all of the above move the air show back to manston.

It's a shame such a wonderful attraction was spoiled for us by groups of young people with cans of alcohol. And the smell of cannibis was evident. We,as a family left quite early because we were concerned how these people would behave later in the evening. We found the prices of everything very high as well.
Perhaps an entrance fee next year would cut down on the wrong type of people attending, and food and fairground prices could be lowered.
