Police speed crackdown

Speeding motorists are being warned they are being
watched.
Officers from the Island Neighbourhood Team will be out in force
all over the summer targeting speeding hot-spots.
The crackdown comes after four out of the five wards made speeding
one of their top PACT (Partners and Communities Together)
priorities for police to deal with.
The crackdown was launched on Tuesday, June 23, and in just half an
hour two motorists were stopped for their speeds and one passenger
fined for not wearing a seatbelt.
Traffic officer PC Mark Sutton used a laser speed gun to measure
the distance a car was travelling over a period of time. Scocles
Road is a 30mph zone.
One driver was found to be doing 36mph and his passenger was not
wearing a seatbelt.
They were fined £60 and received three points on the licence for
the speeding as well as a £30 fine for not wearing the
seatbelt.
Another car was recorded as doing 48mph and when officers asked the
driver why she was going so fast they were told she was lost.
She, too, was fined £60 and received three points.
Sgt Robin Lavender, head of the Island Neighbourhood Team, said:
“Speeding is an ongoing problem, not just on the Island but
everywhere. It’s something that will always exist, we will never
cure it, but we can deter people from doing it.
“Our officers will be educating drivers and informing offenders of
their speeds as well as issuing fines to those breaking the
law.”
If the summer campaign is a success there are plans to roll it into
the autumn.
