Pupils build prize robot

Elizabeth Burrows and Ewan Goddard at the Isle of Sheppey Academy who came second in the Science Technology Challenge held at King's College, London

A robot built by school children has earned them second place in a national competition.

Ewan Goddard and Elizabeth Burrows from the Isle of Sheppey Academy scooped the prize in the final of The Science Technology Challenge at King’s College in London.

The Year 10 pupils had previously won the county heat at University of Kent in Canterbury.

For the final they worked with Year 9 pupil Elly Greenwood from the Marlborough Academy in Hertfordshire.

The trio’s challenge was to build a robot out of Lego and program it to follow a line, avoid an object and respond to a sound.

Ewan and Elizabeth, who attend Harty school at the academy’s east site in Minster, were presented with their trophy by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir David William Brewer.
