The grubby phonebox in Main Road, Queenborough
BT has vowed to send out engineers to clean up a grubby looking phone box after residents commented on the state of it.
The kiosk in Main Road, Queenborough, attracted dozens of remarks from readers after the Times Guardian posted a photo of it on our Facebook group.
It is one of 24 public pay phones on the Island, but the windows on this particular one are so grimy you can barely see inside.
Many members of our Facebook group who commented on the picture said other phone boxes around Sheppey are in an equally bad state, and one user joked ‘at least its still got windows, most around [the] Island haven’t’.
Others said they had seen people using the phones as toilets while one resident said she walked past it the other day and there was a dog walker letting their pet poo in it.
A spokesman for BT said it is used regularly so it has booked an engineer to clear and clean it.
It costs the company around £750 a year to run and maintain a phone box and calls cost a minimum of 60p, which gives half an hour to numbers starting with 01, 02 or 03.
