Sheerness Town St George's BC player Debbie Baker aiming to add national bowls title to county crown

Sheerness Town (St George’s) Bowls Club player Debbie Baker will compete in the national finals of the 2 Wood Singles championships next week.

Baker, pictured, from Minster, takes to the national stage just weeks after clinching the Kent title and will compete from Monday at Leamington Spa Bowling Club, Warwickshire.

The Kent County Women’s Bowling Association finals day took place in mid-July and Baker’s appearance in the final was enough for a place in the nationals. She took the county crown by beating Jane Cogle (Borough Green) 16-11.

"I was gobsmacked to win the title," admitted Baker. "It was a nice thing to win and I’m pleased. It’s been a good season so far."

Baker will be looking to emulate the performance of fellow Island bowler and former St George’s member Wendy King, who won the national title last year.

Shortly after completing the 2 Wood finals, Baker will take part in the National Championships for the Triples, which start on Saturday, August 7.

She will be joined by fellow St George’s players Amy and Judy Banes. The triples team reached the finals of the Kent competition but lost to Folkestone Park.
