Tonbridge: Police and fire services stop dangerous drivers on Cannon Lane and London Road Hildenborough

Kent Police and the Fire and Rescue Service have joined forces to educate motorists about issues involved in dangerous driving.

The forces stopped 75 vehicles in Tonbridge to educate motorists about issues including speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and using mobile phones at the wheel.

Officers stopped cars on Cannon Lane, Tonbridge, and London Road, Hildenborough on Wednesday, July 20.

Over the course of the day, 39 people were stopped for speeding, 32 were stopped for not wearing seatbelts, and a further four were caught using their mobile phone.

Motorists were offered the chance to speak to fire crews about road safety or receive a penalty.

Seven drivers were not given this choice however, as their driving was too dangerous to allow for leniency. These seven people received traffic offence reports.

Sergeant Ashley Boxall, from the Tonbridge and Malling Community Safety Unit, said: "The purpose of joint operations such as this is to educate motorists and improve driving standards.

"Driving at excess speed, without a seatbelt or while using a mobile phone puts yourself and other road users in needless danger.

"I hope that educating drivers in this manner will help get that message across and save lives in the future.'

Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s road safety team crew manager Alan Faulkner added: "It was particularly surprising that so many people were found to be not wearing seatbelts, as you are twice as likely to die in a crash without one.

"It reinforces the need us to increase education and awareness around this offence."
