Tonbridge High Street to reopen after Kent County Council's upgrade project

After months of travel disruption motorists will be relieved to hear Tonbridge High Street will reopen on Friday.

The road was partially closed last August as contractors moved in to complete the £2.65 million upgrade.

It has been shut in parts to ensure cars can always travel in one direction, but for the last few days will be closed completely overnight to allow for resurfacing works.

It will be shut between 7pm and 7am until Friday morning.

Access to businesses and homes will be allowed during these times but there may be delays while machinery is brought in and out of the site.

The work on pavements and placing street furniture will continue as quickly as possible and will be completed by the start of June.

The finishing touches won't affect the flow of traffic.

Last week, Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat wrote to Kent County Council to ask why motorists were facing long delays.

A KCC spokesman said: "We are only too aware that the recent changes in traffic management to facilitate the safe completion of the Tonbridge High Street regeneration scheme has resulted in significant delays and inconvenience to residents, businesses and the traveling public."
