Team of A Level pupils from Sackville School in Hildenborough beat off stiff competition in Bank of England Challenge

A team of economics pupils from a school in Hildenborough beat off stiff competition from others to win the regional heat of a Bank of England competition.

The A Level pupils from Sackville School took part in the Times newspapers' "Target Two Point Zero Interest Rate Challenge".

It sees teams of four students aged 16 to 18 analyse British and global economic data and its possible impact on inflation and the outlook for the UK - just as the monetary policy committee does each month.

The Sackville team gave a 15 minute presentation at the River Centre in Tonbridge last Friday on the monetary police they would set to achieve the government's inflation target.

The team of Oscar Goldsmith, Luke McCarthy, James Harrington and Matteo Brown outlined the virtues of stability in the economy, leaving the base interest rate at 0.5% and maintaining quantitative easing at £375 billion.

After questioning from a panel of experts from the Bank of England, the Sackvilleteam triumphed and now go forward to the area final in February with their sights set on the final which will be contested in March.
