The society, on the The Slade, was formed by a small group of individuals in 1944 and first operated at the old Wallace and Tiernan factory on Five Oak Green Road, before moving to its present set in 1951.

During its running time, the society's track has been flooded on a number of occasions including last winter when it was five feet under water for nearly two months.

Cllr Sasha Luck said: "I found it very interesting seeing the steam and electric trains and was particularly impressed that the Society continued to operate despite frequent flooding over the winter months.

"It was a real honour to be a part of their 70th Anniversary celebrations and I was even treated to a ride around the line which was great fun!"

The society has given rides to many generations of Tonbridge citizens and has even had grandparents bringing their grandchildren back to where they had rides as children.

A constant supply of tea and cakes ensured that all visitors enjoyed their visit.
