Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm admits promotion hopes are a tough ask

Steve McKimm says Tonbridge have their work cut out to make the play-offs after back-to-back defeats by promotion rivals.

Angels blew a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to Needham Market on Saturday, losing keeper Anthony Di Bernardo for the season with a knee injury and finishing with 10 men after Udo Odogi was sent off.

They went on to lose 2-0 at Leiston on Tuesday night as the injury curse struck again.

Luke Allen (dead leg) and Alex Akrofi (ankle) missed out, while Jack Parter had to come off and Damien Scannell finished the match with a tight groin.

Tonbridge are still fourth in the Ryman League Premier Division but McKimm, whose side go to mid-table Staines on Saturday, feels they have a fight on their hands.

He said: “We’ve had a dismal 10 days – two draws and now these two defeats.

“We’ve got a real battle on our hands to even make the play-offs after our last four results.

“It’s put us back – we have a lot of work to do. If we don’t make the play-offs, I will feel I’ve not succeeded and the players won’t have succeeded because we set out to make the play-offs again, if not better. At the moment, it’s a tall order.”

Angels have signed Hemel Hempstead keeper Jonathan Henly on loan to cover for Di Bernardo, while Sonny Miles is closing in on a return after shoulder surgery.

McKimm said: “I’m sick to death of injuries. I don’t like to blame injuries but I’ve never known anything like it.

“You look at the teams around us and they’ve been able to name the side 16 more or less every week.”
