Tonbridge need three wins to keep play-off hopes alive

Manager Steve McKimm thinks Tonbridge need to win their last three games to have any chance of making the Ryman League, Premier Division play-offs.

Angels dropped to seventh after a 2-0 defeat at title-chasing Havant last weekend, two points behind fifth-placed Enfield in the final play-off spot.

They host two struggling sides over Easter with Saturday’s home against Sudbury followed by a trip to Folkestone on Monday, while Worthing visit Longmead on the final day next weekend.

McKimm said: “We need to win the lot – 100%. If we don’t then it’s in the lap of the gods and it is already because if the teams above keep doing what they’re doing, there’s nothing we can do.

“It’s out of our hands. All we can is win our games and hope others slip up. Sudbury and Folkestone are fighting for their lives but so were Hendon when we went there and got a scrappy 2-1 win.

“I’d take scrappy 2-1 wins all the way to the end of the season, as long as we make the play-off.”

McKimm feels Tonbridge are one of the best five teams in the division, even if they miss out on the play-offs.

He said: “The table doesn’t lie but I believe we are one of the best five teams. What’s killed us are injuries to key players. If you look at the top five, none of them have had the long-term injuries we’ve had.

“They might have had one player out at a time but we’ve had four and five.

“No one likes to look for excuses but these aren’t excuses – they’re facts that we’ve had major players out for a long time. It’s nothing to do with training or how we’ve prepared them, it’s just been a shocking freak season.”
