Police say inquiries are ongoing to identify man following the discovery of his body in Tunbridge Wells car park

Police say inquiries are ongoing to formally identify a man following the discovery of his body in a car park in Tunbridge Wells earlier this morning.

Officers remain at the scene in Vale Road, where the body was found during the early hours in a stairway on the first floor.

Police were alerted by firefighters from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, at about 4.04am and his death is currently being treated as unexplained.

Officers will be reviewing post-mortem examination results, which will take place in due course.

The man’s body was discovered at the scene of a fire.

Firefighters were called to Torrington Car Park, following of a blaze in a stairwell there.

Two forensics teams in white suits were seen on the second floor of the multi-storey building, later and one remained at lunchtime.

The car park itself, which is close to Tunbridge Wells railway station, has been cordoned off while inquiries take place and officers have been at the entrance, diverting drivers.

An ambulance and ambulance car were sent to the scene this morning, where paramedics confirmed the death.

It is the same car park where, in 2006, the body of murdered teenager Terry Edmonds was found in a suitcase.

The car park is expected to be reopened by 10pm, this evening.
