Fire in Rusthall High Street

An electrical fault is thought to have sparked a blaze in a church hall in Rusthall High Street.

Five fire engines were sent to St Paul's Church on Monday evening, where it is believed a group of Brownies were having a meeting.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has thanked the group for making a quick call after the fire broke out.

A call came through to firefighters at 6.45pm, after a fire broke out in the roof of the hall.

Firefighters spent most of Monday evening battling the blaze, initially sending five fire engines to the scene.

Lee Abel, the incident commander at the scene, said: "This was a challenging fire in a roof void and the crews have done a good job to bring it under control and prevent the fire spreading further into the building."

Firefighters used ladders to tackle the flames on the roof of the three-storey building, while crews wearing breathing apparatus went inside to fight them internally.

Fogspikes, which use a fine mist to help prevent fire spread, were also used along with hose reel jets.

Up to 20% of the roof is thought to have been damaged by the fire, most of which was put out by 9.20pm.

A spokesperson from KFRS said: "We are aware a group was within the church hall when the fire started.

"We would like to thank them for making the quick call, the information they were able to give us and for giving us quick access to the building."

Two engines stayed on scene damping down until 10.40pm, with crews returning at 12.30am and again at 7.30am on Tuesday to check for any stray embers which could pose a risk.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.
