Smoke seen at Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury

Part of the Tunbridge Wells Hospital had to be evacuated yesterday after a smell of smoke was reported.

Patients and staff had to leave the reception area of the hospital at Pembury and the fire brigade were called due to concerns a fire a had broken out in the basement.

Three crews attended the Tonbridge Road site at 3.42pm and remained on the scene for three and a half hours carrying out thorough checks.

Officers used snake eye and thermal imaging cameras to establish if there was any danger before leaving the facility at 7.22pm.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service could not confirm what had caused the smell. but Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said an electrical fault had triggered the alarm.

A trust spokesman said: "We had to limit visitor access to wards at Tunbridge Wells Hospital for two hours.

"It is believed that the smoke may have been caused by a faulty lead. There was no fire and patients remained safe throughout. Visiting was restricted while the cause of the smoke was investigated. Visitors were able to wait in another area of the hospital while this happened.

He said: “We would like to thank our visitors for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience.”
