Southern Gas Networks will begin work in Crescent Road, Tunbridge Wells, on Monday, September 12

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) will start work to upgrade supply on a main road on Monday, September 12.

The work on Crescent Road, Tunbridge Wells, is part of a £25,000 project to ensure a safe and reliable supply.

The work will replace the existing metal pipes with plastic ones.

The project will run for approximately 10 weeks in total.

During the first three weeks of works, the inside lane of the road heading into Tunbridge Wells will be closed between the police station and Mount Pleasant Avenue.

The second stage will also last for three weeks, when engineers will work on Mount Pleasant Avenue.

The road will be fully closed during the works in interests of safety for the public and the workmen.

The final phase will be at the end of Mount Pleasant Avenue, where it meets Mount Pleasant Road.

Traffic lights will be used to allow the safe flow of vehicles, and to maintain access to the town hall, police station, and theatre.

All businesses will remain open for the duration of the project.

This work forms part of an ongoing mains replacement programme, and the date has been set following discussions with Kent County Council and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.

Steve Colvin, construction manager for SGN, said: "We've worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work, and we will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project.

"Our engineers will be working to finish this work as quickly and safely as possible.

"We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating and we're aware that this area is particulary busy.

"However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means once the work has been completed, local homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come."
