Former Tunbridge Wells firefighter Mat Riley booted off Great British Bake Off

A former Kent firefighter is the seventh contestant to leave this year's Great British Bake Off.

Mat Riley, who lived in Tunbridge Wells before moving to London, only started baking three years ago but found himself up against some of the country's best bakers in the iconic white tent.

The 37-year-old sailed through the first few weeks of GBBO, which began on August 5, and even bagged himself the Star Baker title last week.

But the expectant father, who lives with wife Alex, was booted out of the Bake Off kitchen last night after failing to impress Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Contestants were given three Victorian-themed tasks and Mat's downfall was the Charlotte Russe - a dessert made from cream and jelly which is supported by sponge fingers around the outside.

Victorian week also saw bakers challenged with making a raised game pie and tennis cake - a fruit cake topped with a tennis court made entirely from icing.

Mat gave his all in the three challenges but admitted he was out of his depth.

After failing to impress Mr Hollywood the London firefighter was sent home.

He took to social media last night to thank fans for their support.

Great British Bake Off returns to BBC1 on Wednesday at 8pm.
